When mysterious Berlin-based producer Claptone was invited to remix Grammy-winning Jazz vocalist Gregory Porter, he turned the opportunity down.
“I was too scared to lay hands on one of his graceful recordings,” Claptone, who performs in a mask, humbly explains.
Though the initial offer was politely refused, a year later, Claptone was again offered the honor of remixing Porter. This time he opted to take the gifted baritone’s piano-driven groove to the jacking club dancefloor, with his reworking of Porter’s 2013 single “Liquid Spirit,” the titular track from his Grammy-winning third LP.
“I pulled all my courage together and started to take a journey into ‘Liquid Spirit,’ Claptone explains, walking us through his process. “I close my eyes and enter the basement. I feel the dust between my fingers, I smell the smoke, I get into the rhythm of the band playing. Now I just have to translate that strong sonic image into the language of the club. Such translations can be tricky at times. It is like translating a poem from one language to another, where not only the words count, but the rhyme, the rhythm, the melody. I can only hope I did justice to Gregory Porter, but what I know is that this remix does justice to the clubs.”
Obviously, we agree. The Claptone remix was initially debuted for fans via his new#ClapYourself app, for a mere 24 hours only, so you can probably imagine our excitement at being able to finally offer you the track in full, below.
