“Girlfriend” is a song recorded by Swedish electro pop duo Icona Pop formed by Aino Jawo and Caroline Hjelt. The track is confirmed as the second international and official follow up after the success of their hit “I Love It” released as part of their international EP “Iconic” and also included on their self-titled debut album “Icona Pop” released in Swedish market on November 14, 2012 via TEN Music Group.
This new single marks the beginning of the international promotion for the launch of their global debut album which will be released this fall. The single was released on May 30 in the Swedish radio and will go on sale on iTunes in June. The song uses the sample of two well-known songs ”Me and My Girlfriend” original released in 1996 by Makaveli aka Tupac Shakur (2Pac) which was later sampled on ”’03 Bonnie & Clyde” original released in 2002 by Jay-Z and Beyoncé.
